IbizaIbiza HistoryPhonecian settlers founded a port in the Balearic Islands in 654BC. Then it came under control of the Romans and Greeks. Ibiza also came under the control of Carthage. Ibiza was a major post along the Mediterranean trade routes. Iberia began establishing its own trading stations along the nearby Balearic island of Mallorca. During the Second Punic War, the island inhabitants remained loyal to Carthage. Ibiza was last used by the Carthaginian General Mago to gather supplies and men before sailing to Menorca and then to Liguria. Ibiza negotiated a treaty with the Romans, which spared their destruction. After the fall of the Roman Empire the island fell into control of the Vandals, Byzantines and then Moors. Christianity regained control by Catalan King James I of Aragon in 1235. Since then, the island has had its own self-government. Ibiza is part of the Balearic Autonomous Community, along with Mallorca, Minorca and Formentera. ActivitiesIbiza is a very popular tourist destination, especially due to its legendary nightlife. Ibiza Town, the island's capital on the eastern shore and Sant Antoni to the West are the two hot spots for locals and tourists. |
